Artist Biography:
Teresa Durão

Between Roots and New Beginnings

Teresa Durão was born on 22 August 1974. Her life is shaped by distant roots and wings that have never stopped growing. Born in Quelimane, Mozambique, and brought to Portugal at just five months old, she carried within her the quiet memories of a childhood she never lived, yet whose history left an indelible mark on her soul.

In Portugal, she grew up through the strength of difficult times, learning from every setback and every new beginning. Life never offered her an easy path — yet she always found a way to make hope bloom in the most unexpected places.

From an early age, Teresa dreamed of becoming an artist, but an experience that changed the course of her life took that dream away from her. Yet where many might have given up, Teresa found a new path. She transformed pain into drive, frustration into opportunity, and moved forward with a determination that would come to define her journey. She went on to earn a Bachelor’s degree in Primary Education and a degree in Visual and Technological Education, opening the door to the world of teaching — a world that, unbeknownst to her, had been waiting for her.

Teaching Took on a New Meaning

Over the years, she devoted herself to teaching in mainland Portugal and, later, in Madeira, where she continues to teach. In every student, she saw a seed; in every class, a garden in transformation. Her mission was never simply to teach knowledge, but to awaken minds, nurture dreams, and help each young person discover the strength they carry within.

For Teresa, education is more than the transmission of knowledge: it is about touching lives. It is recognising the light in the eyes of those who begin to believe in themselves. It is understanding that, even when life leads us away from the path we imagined, it may be guiding us towards the place where we truly belong.

Today, Teresa Durão looks back with gratitude and forward with hope. Her story is a testament to the fact that no fall is ever final, and that light — her light — always finds a way to prevail.
